Respiratory causes: it includes infections, smoking, obstructive airways disease, cystic fibrosis, occupational diseases and emphysema etc.
Non-Respiratory Causes: it includes post nasal discharge, sinusitis, gastro-oesophageal reflex, cardiac diseases, pericardial and diaphragmatic diseases and psychological factors.
Three Common causes:
- Post nasal discharge
- Asthma
- Reflexes
  Early symptoms:
- Irritation & triggering of a chain of events
- Air comes out with high pressure through nostrils
- Voluntary or involuntary process resulting in cough

Acute coughs are of 2 types:
A) Infectious causes: It include viral upper respiratory infections, pneumonia, whooping cough, acute bronchitis.
