What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition that occurs when the protective cartilage cushioning the ends of bones gradually wears away. As the cartilage breaks down, bones begin to rub against each other, leading to pain, inflammation, stiffness, and restricted movement. Although it commonly affects the knees, hips, hands, and spine, osteoarthritis can develop in almost any joint.

Causes & Symptoms

Osteoarthritis may develop due to aging, previous joint injuries, obesity, repetitive joint stress, genetic factors, poor posture, or long-term wear and tear of the joints. Furthermore, excess body weight places additional pressure on weight-bearing joints, increasing the risk of cartilage damage over time.

Common symptoms include persistent joint pain, morning stiffness, swelling, tenderness, reduced flexibility, difficulty walking or climbing stairs, and a grinding sensation during movement. Therefore, early diagnosis and timely management can help slow disease progression and improve overall quality of life.

Ayurveda’s View of Osteoarthritis

According to Ayurveda, osteoarthritis is commonly associated with an aggravated Vata Dosha, particularly affecting the bones (Asthi Dhatu) and joints. Furthermore, weakened digestion (Agni) and the accumulation of toxins (Ama) may contribute to inflammation and reduced joint function. Ayurvedic treatment focuses on balancing Vata, nourishing the joints, improving digestion, reducing inflammation, and promoting healthy mobility through individualized herbal therapies, nutrition, and lifestyle modifications.
